R. HIRAM (HI) HOXIE

Graveside services will be 3 p. m. Tuesday in Fairview Cemetery for former Waterloo resident R. Hiram (Hi) Hoxie, 53, of Des Moines and San Benito, Texas, who died early Sunday morning at his Des Moines home of a heart attack.

Masonic general services will be Tuesday at 11 a. m. at the Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines.

Mr. Hoxie was born Oct. 18, 1909, in Waterloo. He was president and manager of the Hi Hoxie, Inc., wholesalers of fruit and vegetables, until his retirement in 1959. He had lived in Des Moines the past 28 years.

He was a member of Capital Masonic Lodge, York Mid Scottish Rite Masonic orders, Ca-ga-zig Shrine, Shrine, Oriental Band, Men's Garden Club, the Elks, Des Moines Club and the Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines.

In Texas he belonged to the Bedouin Band, the Rio Grand Valley Shrine Club and Rotary.

Surviving are his widow, Madeline, son, Robert H., of Burlington; two daughters, Mary H., of Iowa City, and Linda, at home, and his mother, Mrs. Guy E. Logan, of Des Moines.

Memorial contributions may be made to the re-improvement fund for a cabin at Camp Matigwa near Boone given by Mr. Hoxie in 1940 in memory of his father R. J. Hoxie.

Ralph was the son of Ralph John and Johanna Artz Hoxie. A birth announcement in the October 20, 1909 Waterloo Courier told of the coincidence that Ralph was born on the anniversary of the birth of his brother John. (John A. Hoxie 1904-1924.)

[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, October 11, 1933]

Miss Doris Madeline Hazen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George L. Hazen, 236 Columbia circle, and R. Hiram Hoxie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph J. Hoxie, 304 South street, were united in marriage at a ceremony performed by Rev. Harry J. Moore, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian church, at the home of the bride at high noon Wednesday, October 11.

Mrs. Hoxie graduated from West High School and Gates Business College and is a former student at Grinnell College. She has been bookkeeper in the Hazen Grocery tor two years. Mr. Hoxie is a graduate of West High school and former student at Grinnell College, He is employed by the Waterloo Fruit & Commission Co. After their wedding trip they made their home at 702 Moir Street, Waterloo.
