Robert Lloyd Ryan 1923-1943

KILLED IN PLANE CRASH

Robert Lloyd Ryan, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verne E. Ryan of 1101 Longfellow Ave. was killed in a plane crash at the Corpus Christi, Texas naval air training center. He was a graduate of Waterloo, Iowa's East High School. He was captain of the wrestling team in his senior year.

Ryan had about three weeks of advance training as a pilot left before receiving the gold wings of the navy air corps and an ensign's commission. He enlisted on September 3, 1942 in the U.S. Naval Reserve as an aviation cadet and entered active service on Nov. 13. His primary flight training was taken at the Western Union college, LeMars, Iowa, and pre-flight training at the State University of Iowa, Iowa City. Following his basic training at Camp Livermore, California, he began his final training at Corpus Christi, Texas.

Robert Lloyd Ryan was born July 25, 1923 on a farm near LeRoy. He was a member of the First Prebyterian Church in Waterloo, Iowa. Surviving besides his parents are a brother David of Waterloo and a sister Mrs. Clyde Strausser of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held in the First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo with the burial in the Fairview Cemetery following the service.
