WIRT HOXIE DIES
OF MENINGITIS;
SICK TWO WEEKS

Business Leader and Former
County Attorney Will Be
Buried Saturday

MERITED REPUTATION AS CONVICTING PROSECUTOR

Made Great Record in Famous Cases;
Many Associates Pay Him Tribute.

Wirt P. Hoxie, 253 Prospect Avenue, vice-president of the Waterloo Fruit & Commission Co., and former county attorney of Black Hawk County, died at 6:10 a. m. today at Allen Memorial hospital after a gallant two weeks' battle against meningitis. He was 57 years old.

For the past two days Mr. Hoxie had been unconscious. From the first, although realizing the serious nature of his illness, the patient had hopes of recovery. Stricken in the full vigor of his powerful physique on New Year's Eve, he co-operated optimistically, as was his nature, with his physician and nurses.

Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Saturday in Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Fairview. Dr. Roy Leslie Smith, pastor of Grace M. E., will officiate, assisted by Dr. J. Richmond of First Congregational Church. The body was removed to the O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home.

Few men in Black Hawk county had a wider acquaintance than Mr. Hoxie and none had a wider circle of close friends. His jovial nature, his ready smile and cordial handshake brought him close to the hearts of all. In his home life these beneficial traits had the fullest blossoming.

Son of Sheriff.

Born on a farm in Barclay township Sept. 27, 1871, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hiram B. Hoxie, Wirt had spent all his life in this county. In 1888, when Wirt was 17 years old, the parents moved to Waterloo, the father having been elected to the office of sheriff. Wirt attended the rural schools and was graduated from East High School. Later he attended Iowa State university, completing the law course in 1897.

Wirt Hoxie served for a time as deputy sheriff under his father. After leaving law school he formed a partnership with William H. Brunn, a classmate In East High. In 1908 Mr. Hoxie was elected county attorney. His successful administration won him two succeeding terms, making six years in all in that office.

Black Hawk has had many efficient county attorneys but none of them achieved a greater record of convictions in difficult cases than Mr. Hoxie and his able assistant, Edward H. McCoy. His previous acquaintance throughout the county was greatly extended by his term as state's attorney.

On Sept. 25, 1907, Mr. Hoxie married Miss Ruth Ling, then a teacher in East High School. Besides the widow and son, Wirt P., Jr., age 13, there survive Ralph J. Hoxie, a brother, 304 South street, president of the Waterloo Fruit & Commission Co., and Mrs. Nellie Kell, a sister, 315 Reber Avenue.

Shortly after completing his long service as county attorney Mr. Hoxie retired from the practice of the law and joined his brother in business. Mr. Hoxie was always interested in politics and was one of the leaders of the Republican party in the county. He was very active in the last primary campaign and in the general election. He was a member of Grace M. E. Church, the Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star, and the Elks lodge. He was one of the most active men in the city in community service. He was in all the drives and campaigns for funds and memberships in organizations that had as their object the betterment of the community.
