MRS. HIRAM HOXIE
DIES HERE TODAY

Death Comes to Old Resident After
Severe Attack of Heart Trouble
Nine Weeks Ago.

Mrs. Hiram B. Hoxie, wife of Hiram B. Hoxie, a former sheriff of Black Hawk County, and a resident of Waterloo since 1888, died today at 8 a.m. at the family home 1126 Sycamore Street. Mrs. Hoxie had been afflicted from heart disease for a number of years and nine weeks ago suffered an acute attack. She had been confined to her bed since. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. from the home.

Mrs. Hoxie was born in La Peer, Courtland County, New York, on June 13, 1844. When 10 years of age her father died and with her mother she moved to a farm near Marathon, New York, where she attended the village school. She later graduated from Wells Academy of Marathon, New York, then entered Cazenovia Seminary, a Methodist school at Cazenovia, and from this school she entered the Normal Training school of Oswego, New York, from which school she graduated. Following her graduation she taught in the city school of Oswego for some time. In school she specialized in elocution.

About 1869 she came west and lived for about a year with her cousin, Judge Hillsinger, of Sabula, Iowa.

She met Mr. Hoxie while she was teaching in New York and on October 27, 1870, was married to him at Mount Carroll, Illinois. Immediately after her marriage she and Mr. Hoxie moved to a farm in Barclay Township where they lived until January 1, 1888, when Mr. Hoxie was elected sheriff of Black Hawk County and they moved to Waterloo where they have since resided. Upon coming to Waterloo she became a member of Grace M. E. Church.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Ladies of the G.A.R. for many years and until the past two years she was a member of the Woman's Club of Waterloo.

Immediately following her marriage she taught in the first normal teacher's institute held in Iowa, at Iowa Falls, and for some years was prominent in educational circles, teaching in various county institutes in Iowa.

She is survived by her husband, Hiram B. Hoxie, and three children, Wirt P. Hoxie, Mrs. Nellie Ninon Hoxie Kell and Ralph J. Hoxie, all of Waterloo, and four grandchildren.
