Theora Mae "Tedi" Whelchel was born March 23, 1937 in LeMars, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Vera (Scovel) Schimberg. She died Friday, December 15, 2000, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at 63 years of age.

She married Stanley Whelchel on June 25, 1958 in Sioux Center, Iowa. Theora was a 1955 graduate of Rock Valley High School, a 1959 graduate of Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and received her masters degree in Textiles and Clothing from Colorado State University in 1968. She taught Home Economics for 39 years at Hudson High School, retiring in 1998. Theora was a member of the American Home Economics Association, Iowa State Teachers Association, National Education Association, Hudson Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma and was a 1998 Gold Star Teacher.

Theora is survived by her husband Stanley, of Cedar Falls; her mother, Vera Schimberg of Kingsley, Iowa; a sister, Suzanne Timmer and her husband William of Hartland, Wisconsin; two nephews, Kyle Timmer and Rev. Bob Fisher, and three nieces, Rev. Kelli Fisher, Kristin Timmer and Sanic Timmer.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorial services were 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2000 at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in inurnment at a later date in Kingsley Cemetery, Kingsley, Iowa. Memorials may be given to the Theora Whelchel Scholarship Fund at the Hudson High School in Hudson, Iowa.
