LA PORTE CITY — Chester Merle Vaughn, 96, of La Porte City, died Thursday, Feb. 23, at La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center of natural causes.

He was born June 3, 1915, in Rothsay, Minn., son of Chester Lee and Ada Edna Smith Vaughn. He married Tillie Vierkant Jan. 12, 1941. She died in 1948. He married Wilma McClurg Turner Dec. 18, 1953, in La Porte City. She died in 2002.

He graduated from Mason City High School in 1933. Mr. Vaughn was a hired-hand and worked in the sugar beets, which started his lifelong occupation of farming in 1938. He was a 50-plus year member of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows.

Survived by a son, Roger (Janice) of La Porte City; a daughter-in-law, Judy Vaughn of Belleview, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Maryann (Al) Althaus of Independence and Carol Christopher of Washington; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a son, Gary; a stepdaughter, Veronica May; three brothers, Kenneth, Donald and Lester; and a sister, Floy Link.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at La Porte City Funeral Service, and also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul United Methodist Church.
