MARIA SERGEANT
92 DIES IN HOME
OCCUPIED 71 YEARS

Survivor of Hudson Pioneer
and Had Been Invalid
Long Time

HUDSON, IOWA - Mrs. Byron Sergeant, one of the few survivors of the group of pioneers which settled this section of Iowa, died last midnight at the age of 92 in the house to which she went 71 years ago as a bride.

The funeral arrangements for which have not been completed will be at the family home.

Maria Crane was born 10 miles from Niagara Falls, New York, on November 15, 1835, and accompanied her mother and brothers to Henderson, Illinois, when she was a small child. Her father died when she was five years old.

In 1854 she moved to Iowa with the family of A. B. Rowe, driving a horse the entire distance from Henderson to Waterloo

She was married on February 18, 1856, to Byron Sergeant, the ceremony being read by Judge Randal in a small brick tavern, kept by Frank Thomas, on Fifth Street, between the river and Commercial Street. It was razed in 1909, after having stood probably longer than any other structure of its era. Their wedding was the first of a couple from Black Hawk Township.

Three children 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren survive. The children are: Mrs. Eva Mastain, Compton, California; George C. and Marilla, Hudson.

Mrs. Alma Fearer, another daughter, died in 1906 and Mr. Sergeant died many years ago.

Mrs. Sergeant was a helpless invalid for a long period of years.
