LA PORTE CITY - William R. "Bill" Starr, 90, of La Porte City, died Thursday, Feb. 16, at the La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center of natural causes.

He was born July 24, 1921, in Jefferson, son of John H. and Elva Kline Starr. He married Grace L. Carney on Aug. 16, 1941, in Bethany, Mo. She died Oct. 30, 2004.

Mr. Starr served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the La Porte City American Legion U.S.S. San Diego Post 207 and the Ascalon Masonic Lodge 393 of Dysart, where he held many offices such as senior warden and worshipful master. He retired after working many years as a safety director for many different Rock Producers. He was a certified Red Cross Instructor and Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survived by two sons, William P. (Ann) and Robert, both of La Porte City; two grandchildren, Brenda (Jim) McCarville of Sarasota, Fla., and Diana (Paul) Romine of Des Moines; five great-grandchildren, Ryan, Brant, Megan, Cole and Christian; a sister, Helen Pelz of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by a granddaughter, Heather McNamara; a brother, John; and a sister, Hazel Wilson.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at American Lutheran Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Graveside military rites will be conducted by La Porte City American Legion USS San Diego Post 207 and the VFW Post 3983. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today at La Porte City Funeral Service, where there will be a 7 p.m. Masonic service by the Ascalon Lodge 393 of Dysart. Visitation also an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family in lieu of flowers.
