DROWNED IN
SWIMMING POOL

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Carleton
Haven, Former Local
Residents, is Victim of Water.

It was with great regret that relatives and friends in this city learned Tuesday evening that Carleton Jack, 12 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Haven of Washington, Iowa, had met an untimely death in the swimming pool at Marion Tuesday evening, where the Haven family in company with Mr. and Mrs. E. Patterson and family, of Cedar Rapids, and well known here, were enjoying themselves in the pool as part of their Fourth of July outing.

The Evening Journal of Washington in its issue of Wednesday, says:

"Carleton Jack Haven, 12 year old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Haven of Washington, was drowned yesterday evening in the American Legion swimming pool at Marion, Iowa.

"The body was brought to the L. A. Jones Funeral Home, where preparations for funeral services are being made today.

"Services will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon at the funeral home, and will be conducted by Dr. F. C. Witzigman of the Methodist church, with burial in Elm Grove
Cemetery.

"Jack, who could not swim — he had intended to learn this summer as a part of his Boy Scout program—had gone to the pool with other members of the Haven family and was in water four feet deep at the shallow end of the pool when he was drowned.

"Mr. and Mrs. Haven and two other children, and J. E. Patterson and family of Cedar Rapids, old friends of the Havens whom they had been visiting yesterday, were playing in the pool and Jack had strayed from other members of the party. It is a large pool and they did not try to keep together, knowing that the boy would not get into water beyond his depth.

"None of the life guards or others at the pool witnessed the drowning, as apparently no one happened to be near him at the time and apparently he made no struggle. His father today expressed the surmise that Jack accidentally slipped under the water and drew water into his lungs with the result that he was unable to struggle against drowning.

"He was not missed until about six o'clock when the party left the pool and Jack was missing. His clothes were found in the locker where he had left them and an immediate search for his body was started. It was found about 6:35.

"Although he had probably been in the water nearly an hour efforts were started at once to resuscitate the boy, under the direction of his father and the life guards. An inhalator was secured, and for two hours and a half unceasing efforts were made to bring back the breath of life, but utterly without avail.

"As soon as the Linn county coroner could be secured to give his consent, the body was brought here and the sorrowful Haven family came home to take up the task of laying away the one thus tragically removed from their circle.

"The Haven and Patterson families, former neighbors at La Porte City, had been spending the day together in Cedar Rapids. They enjoyed a picnic dinner at Ellis Park and in the afternoon choose to go on a water frolic, deciding on the supervised Marion pool as a safer place than the Cedar River near the park.

"Jack was born at Colfax, Iowa, March 15, 1921, The family came here nine years ago from Centerville when Mr. Haven took his present position with the telephone company. The family home is 600 South Marion Avenue.

"Besides the parents he leaves a sister, Betty, fifteen years old, and a brother, Bobby, eight.

"He was an extraordinarily fine youngster, always happy, a favorite with the boys in his circle of friends. He was a pupil at the junior high school, having completed the sixth grade in June. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Sunday school class of boys taught by Mrs. Pearl S. Whistler. he was in Boy Scout troop No. 53, and for the last eight months had served as scribe of that troop."
