WATERLOO - Lewis Melvin Hines, 87, of Waterloo, formerly of East St. Louis, Ill., and Milwaukee, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 at Allen Hospital.

He was born Oct. 19, 1924, in Sturgis, Miss., son of Ben Hines and Edmonia Gladney. He was raised by his grandparents, Bennie and Suzanna Wine.

Mr. Hines served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II. He worked at Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery until retirement.

Survived by a sister, Nannie Gladney of Starksville, Miss.; three daughters, Brenda, Annette and Latrice; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many family and friends.

Preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine; a brother, John (Dorothy); and three sisters, Minnie Lee, Geneva and Rosie Lee.

Visitation Services: from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sanders Funeral Service. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Garden of Memories Cemetery, with full military rites by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Note corrected date of visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 323 E. Louise St., Waterloo, Iowa.

Lewis was a senior companion, and a diehard St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packers fan, with a love for boxing and basketball as well.
