Death of James Holmes

James Holmes, of Hudson, died at his home at 6 o'clock last evening, at a ripe old age. Mr. Holmes has been a resident of this county for many years, being numbered among its oldest settlers. He was for a long time one of the sturdy and prosperous tillers of the soil of Black hawk and only retired from active life when forced to do so because of his advanced age. He was a man of moral character and sterling integrity and by these and many other admirable qualities he commanded the respect of all with whom he came in contact.

The deceased raised a family of eight children, who have grown up and entered into the activities of life to bring honor to his name. There were five sons and three daughters. Three of the sons, Richard, James and Frank, are citizens of Waterloo.

The deceased also had a brother John Holmes, residing near this city.

Arrangements for the funeral had not been completed at noon today, pending the arrival of relatives from South Dakota, but it is not likely that the obsequies will be held before Thursday.
