WATERLOO WOMAN DIES IN CYCLE ACCIDENT
A 21-year-old Waterloo woman died early Tuesday about six hours after she was injured in a motorcycle, accident in the 1600 block of Falls Avenue.
Officials at University Hospitals in Iowa City said Diane M. Simon of 421 W. Sixth St., died about 12:15 a.m. of head injuries.
She and the driver of the motorcycle, Willie L. Paxton, 27, of 141 Stewart Ave., were transferred from Schoitz Memorial Hospital to Iowa City by a National Guard helicopter Monday night.
PAXTON, vho also sustained head injuries in the crash, was reported in critical condition Tuesday morning.
According to police, Paxton lost control of his westbound motorcycle on a curve while attempting to pass a car.
The motorcycle jumped a curb, slammed into a utility pole and tipped several times before coming to rest, police said.
Witnesses told police the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident happened about 6:10 p.m. Neither Paxton nor Miss Simon were wearing helmets, police said.
Miss Simon's death raised Waterloo's traffic fatality toll for the year to seven.
FUNERAL SERVICES for Miss Simon will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Parrott & Wood Funeral Home where friends may call after noon Wednesday.
She was born Aug. 11, 1953, in Waterloo, the daughter of Kenneth and Irene McCrady Simon. She was employed by Valley Park Lanes in Cedar Falls and was a 1971 graduate of Cedar Falls High School.
Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Kenneth Lofstuen of 1310 Hawthorne Dr., Cedar Falls; her father, Kenneth Simon of 1119 Cleveland St.; a sister, Mrs. Dennis Fratzke of 421 W. Sixth St.; a brother, Kenneth Simon of 1310 Hawthorne Dr.; paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William Simon of 2711 Falls Ave.; maternal grandmother Mrs. Lola McCrady of Des Moines.
