Robert James "Bob" Ruhs, 78, of Hot Springs, Ark., formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012 at National Park Medical Center, Odyssey Hospice unit.

He was born Feb. 7, 1933, in Waterloo, to Otto and Alta LaMaster Ruhs.

In addition, Viva McDonald lived with his family during the war; and was a significant part of his youthful years. He married Janice L. Hastings in Waterloo Oct. 19, 1956. They were later divorced. Prior to leaving Iowa in 1987, he served in the U.S. Air Force, was on the Waterloo Police Department, and later retired as a supervisor from John Deere Tractor Works, Department 65S, Component Works, after 21 years.

He is survived by his wife, Susy; daughters, Linda M. (Neal Hartman) Ruhs of Gilbertville and Deborah S. McClain of Fairbank; a son, Collin A. Ruhs of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie (Jerry) Easter of Waterloo and Charlotte French of Sarepta, La.; and aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, stepfather Henry L. Dietrich and grandparents.

Arrangements were entrusted to Welch Funeral Home, Arkadelphia, Ark. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.
