Preceded in death by: two brothers, Wallace in infancy and Donald; one sister, Lois Rainey; and a son-in-law, Robert Miller.

Merlyn V. "Bob" Boyken, 82, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Jan. 4, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born April 15, 1926, in Titonka, son of Fred and Martha Brandt Boyken. He married Betty A. Phelps on Feb. 20, 1949, in Waterloo.

Mr. Boyken served in the Navy from 1944 to June 8, 1946, on the USS LST 1033 as ship's cook (BKR) second class. Bob received the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal (2 stars) and the Phillippine Liberation Ribbon (1 star).

Bob attended barber college from 1947 to 1948. He owned and operated six Boyken's Barber and Beauty Salons and was an insurance salesman for Aid Associations for Lutherans.

He was a lobbyist for 39 years for the following clients: nurse association, Realtors, barbers, beauticians, jewelers, optometrists, quarter horse racing, salvage, scrap metal companies, school bus sales, fraternal insurance companies and various other clients.

He also farmed for 35 years on his farms in Hudson, Dunkerton and Independence. He was part owner of the Waterloo Bowl In.

Bob was appointed a member of Iowa Barber Board of Examiners, the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce and numerous other organizations. He was involved with his church in various duties and church school on the board of education.

Survivors include: his wife; a son, Stephen D. of home; seven daughters, Kathleen A. Boyken of home, Barbara K. (Gary) Tomlinson of McAllen, Texas, Cynthia M. (James) Hughes of Waterloo, Donna J. (Jay) Ableidinger of Littleton, Colo., Linda D. Boyken of Coralville, Debra L. Miller of Waterloo and Jennifer S. (Scott) Holman of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Joshua Miller, Geoffrey Miller, Sarah Miller, Christine Holman and Anthony Holman; two brothers, Arthur D.W. (Norma) Boyken of Waterloo and Russell D. of Nevada; and one sister, Maralice (Robert) Harrison of Park Forest, Ill.

Preceded in death by: two brothers, Wallace in infancy and Donald; one sister, Lois Rainey; and a son-in-law, Robert Miller.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Faith Lutheran Church with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo and Evansdale AMVETS posts 19 and 31. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, continuing for one hour before services at the church on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
