WATERLOO - Merel E. "Smitty" Smith, 95, of Waterloo, died Friday, Oct. 6, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 28, 1911, in Fort Dodge, son of Frank and Lettie Smith. He married Edith P. Burnell in 1933 at Linden United Methodist Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Smith worked at Rath Packing Co. for 46 years in the mechanical stockroom, retiring in 1973. He was a member of Cedar Valley Community Church.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Donna (Ivan) Miller of Waterloo; two brothers, Bert (Jackie) of Evansdale and Lee Sr. of Vinton; four grandchildren, Reece (Anne) Miller, Randy (Carla) Miller, Lori (Larry) Wendling and Mark (Jodi) Miller; and nine great-grandchildren, Wesley Miller, Justin (Aubrie) Miller, Melissa Wendling, Ryan Miller, Miranda Miller, Alli Miller, Philip Wendling, Andrew Miller and Jacob Miller.

Preceded in death by four brothers, Calvin, Cecil, Bill and Wayne; and five sisters, Myrtle Dickinson, Viva Showers, Letha Nickles, Hazel Thompson and Julia Morrison.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
