WATERLOO - Lonny M. Betts, 68, of Waterloo, died Friday, Jan. 13, at Allen Hospital.

He was born Nov. 16, 1943, in Waterloo, son of Leonard and Flora Schoel Betts. He married Rita K. Wirtz Jan. 25, 1997, in Waterloo.

He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1962, and attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology for aviation mechanic training. Mr. Betts was a U.S. Navy veteran, stationed in California and Florida during the Vietnam War, working as an aviation mechanic. He worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing in Waterloo for about 30 years until the plant closed, and was an engineer at Waterloo East High School for 13 years, retiring in 2008.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Amanda (companion Aaron Burch) of New Hartford; three sons, Lenny (Amy), Teddy (Teff) Barker and Tony (Shane) Barker, all of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel, Waterloo, with full military honors by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Lonny loved the outdoors, especially fishing. He was a caring person, and enjoyed helping others. He was fond of his dog, Daisy. Lonnie gave the gift of life by being an eye and tissue donor after his death.
