Steven LaVern Dettmer, 50, of 5154 Foulk Road, Waterloo, died at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, on Friday morning, July 3, 1998, after suffering a heart attack on Thursday while working at Bertch Cabinet.

He was born September 13, 1947, near Sumner, Iowa, the son of LaVern H. and Ruth H. (Bauer) Dettmer. He was baptized on October 5, 1947, and confirmed in 1961, both at St. John's United Church of Christ-Siegel. He attended country schools in his early elementary years and graduated from Tripoli High School in 1965. Following his schooling he worked two jobs at Bremer Co-op Creamery and Chamberlain Manufacturing in Waterloo. He was married and later divorced. Steve then worked at John Deere for five and a half years until 1982. He was married to Mavorette Nosko on July 7, 1979, in the backyard of their home. They owned and operated the Red Cedar Lounge for five years. Steve then went to work for Bertch Cabinet for the past four years.

Steve liked hunting and fishing as well as working in his garden. During his high school years he excelled in football and track, and still holds the record in the mile run.

Steve is survived by his wife, Mavorette of Waterloo, Iowa; his mother, Ruth Dettmer of rural Waverly, IA; one daughter, Valerie Juhl of Des Moines, IA; five sons, Douglas Juhl of Des Moines, IA; Jeffrey DeBeer of Mesa, AZ, Dan DeBeer of Waterloo, IA; Kelen Nosko of Waterloo, IA; Korey Nosko of Waterloo, IA; two grandchildren, John Nosko, age ten, and Lauren Juhl, age three; three brothers and their wives, James A. and Marilyn Dettmer of Ionia, IA, Eugene W. and Helen Dettmer of rural Sumner, IA; Wayne L. Dettmer of Maynard, IA; and three sisters and their husbands, Jolene Lindsey of Loveland, CO, Carol J. and Randal Inman of Maynard, IA, and Patricia J. and Jerry Steven of Elma, IA; his mother-in-law, Lucy Crowley; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Keith Crowley, Malvern & Joyce Crowley, Louie Schmidt and Jim & Bonnie Wilberding and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, LaVern H. Dettmer on January 4, 1998; his father-in-law, George Crowley; a nephew, Thomas Dettmer; and two sisters-in-law, Marvel Schmidt and Rose Crowley.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at 11:00 A.M. at St. John's United Church of Christ-Siegel, 1529 Killdeer Ave., rural Waverly, (Highway 63 north, to Highway 188, west one mile to Kildeer Avenue, and south 1 1/2 miles) with Rev. Eugene Walther officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Monday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, and for an hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
