WATERLOO - Donald Raymond Thompson, 78, of Waterloo, died at home Tuesday, Dec. 6, of cancer.

He was born June 8, 1933, in Lawler, son of Albert O. and Anna G. Larson Thompson. He married Melva Jean Brummond on June 21, 1954, in New Hampton.

Mr. Thompson graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1952, then served in the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. After 21 years of service he retired in 1973 as a technical sergeant. After retiring from the service he attended Hawkeye Community College and became a television technician, serving the Waterloo area until he retired in 1995.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Don C. (Jaculin) of Southlake, Texas, and Thomas (Connie) of Norwalk; a daughter, Joy (Brent) Fischer of Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Robby (Stacy) Thompson, Jodie Thompson, Steven Fischer, Christopher Fischer, Tyler Thompson and Calyn Thompson; a great-granddaughter, Madison Grace Thompson; and a brother-in-law, Max Crabtree of Fredericksburg.

Preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jill Marie; five brothers, Merlin in infancy, Orlando (Genevieve), Francis, Harley and Lloyd (Grace); and two sisters, Lila (Myrtle) Crabtree and Maxine (Keith) Roth.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with entombment in Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, assisted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.
