Ross D. Christensen - Ross D. Christensen, 71, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Nov. 27, at Allen Hospital after a long illness.

He was born April 6, 1940, in Atlantic, son of Svend and Kathryn Christensen. He married Pat Catron on Sept. 2, 1962, in Atlantic.

He graduated from high school in Atlantic. He received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in orthodontics in 1966 from the University of Iowa. Dr. Christensen worked at the National Institute of Health and purchased the orthodontic practice of Dr. Dewey Felcher in Waterloo in 1968. He had been in a group practice with doctors, including Sam Christensen, Buzz Bigelow, Glen Miller, Roger Day, Jean Treder, Mike Freeseman, and his son, Greg Christensen, since 1994. Dr. Christensen was a member and leader of the Waterloo Community School Board, past president of the board of regents of Wartburg College, Greater Cedar Valley Alliance, founding member of Community National Bank, co-founder and owner of Heartland Inns, active community supporter and advocate for Young Life, member of the University of Iowa Foundation and involved in leadership in numerous other organizations.

Survived by his wife; a son, Greg (Dani) of Waterloo; a daughter, Lisa (David) Kempston of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Ashlyn, Ben, Seth, Andrew and Anna Christensen, Alex, Brennan, Kate and Connor Kempston and Allison Martyr; and a sister, Karla Smit of Ankeny.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Sheryl Martyr; and a brother, Tom.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with inurnment in Lake View Gardens Cemetery, Okoboji. Public visitation will take place during fellowship time following the service Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Allen Hospital Foundation, Young Life of Black Hawk County or Boys & Girls Club of Black Hawk County.
