WATERLOO - DeShawn R. Oliver, 39, of Las Vegas, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Nov. 4.
He was born Oct. 16, 1972, in Waterloo, son of Marvin D. Oliver and Diane Thomas Oliver. He married Starr Brown on Nov. 19, 2007, in Las Vegas.
Mr. Oliver was a 1991 graduate of Waterloo West High School and attended the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He established Star 1 Carpet Care in 2008, and he and his wife opened the Shoe Lounge, a women's shoe store, on Oct. 22, 2011. He was a member of Bread of Life Ministries of Glory.
Survived by his wife; three sons, DeShawn Jr. of Atlanta, DeAveon of Las Vegas and Omarion of Des Moines; a daughter, Londyn Oliver of Las Vegas; his mother and stepfather, Diane and John Craig of Waterloo; maternal grandmother, Ida B. Holmes of Waterloo; stepmother, Cataleen Ruffin; a sister, Taneicia Oliver of Las Vegas; a brother, Andre-Woods-Oliver of Las Vegas; four stepbrothers, John Craig Jr. of Chicago, Michael Kates of Des Moines, Aaron Kates of Storm Lake and Shannon Craig of Fort Dodge; his father- and mother-in-law, Phil and Robin Harris of Las Vegas; and a host of relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by his father; paternal grandmother, Virgie M. Oliver; maternal grandfather, Edward L. Holmes; and maternal great-grandparents, Willie and Minnie Powell.
Services were Saturday, Nov. 12, at True Love Missionary Baptist Church, Las Vegas. Thomas and Jones Funeral Home, Las Vegas, was in charge of arrangements.
His love for football led him to attend the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. DeShawn was an ambitious entrepreneur. He will be remembered for always being willing to give, whether it was his time, support or advice.
The family wants to thank everyone for all of their prayers and support.
