WATERLOO - Neil T. McCaffery Sr., 90, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Nov. 17, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 20, 1921, in Glasgow, Scotland, son of John T. and Agnes S. Murphy McCaffery. He immigrated to the United States with his mother and two brothers in 1929, arriving in New York at Ellis Island.

He married Helen J. Neessen on Jan. 2, 1942, in Waterloo. She preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2009.

In earlier years, Neil and Helen loved to dance at the Electric Park Ballroom, where they first met. One of Neil's favorite pastimes was his bowling leagues. He loved to walk and ride bike for miles. In his lifetime, he loved playing cards with family and friends. He enjoyed his family very much.

Mr. McCaffery was employed by John Deere and Co. as a Tool and Die maker. He later became a Methods Tool Supervisor, retiring in 1982 after 42 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving in World War II from 1942-44. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Neil is survived by one son, Neil T. McCaffery Jr. of Waterloo; two daughters, Cheryl (Richard) Jensen of Waverly and Nancy (James) Probst of Green River, Wyo.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Sam and John; and one sister-in-law, Betty McCaffery.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Friendship Village Chapel, with a lunch following. There will be no viewing. In accordance with his wishes, Neil's body has been donated to science at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
