Lydia Wilson

Lydia Lopp Wilson was born near Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1807.

She was united in marriage to Thomas Wilson, of the same county, in 1824 and resided near Connellsville, at the confluence of the Dunbar and Allegheny Rivers. At this place she spent thirteen years of her married life.

Thence in 1837 they emigrated to Ohio and settled in Knox County, while it was very new and in a wild state, and remained there 27 years. Still continuing their course westward, in 1864 they removed to Black Hawk County, Iowa, and settled between Waterloo and Hudson. In this house in 1869 she lost her companion in life and at the age of 74 years; after remaining on the farm four or five years, she came to Waterloo to live.

Her stay in the city was of short duration, not to exceed three or four years, after which, with four of the younger children of the family, she continued her course westward and settled in Britt, Hancock county, Iowa, and remained there until her health failed her.

Discouraged and somewhat broken in spirit, she returned to Black Hawk County, but in a feeble condition, but with faith and patience in a Savior's love as enduring as the rock of adamant. Yet with a strong constitution and a desire to live, she continued to live for a period of five years, and on March eleventh, 1896, departed this life with a full assurance of hope and an immortality beyond, aged 89 years, 6 months and 11 days.

From the above union there were thirteen children born, eleven sons and two daughters, of which nine survive her -- eight sons and one daughter. Three sons and one daughter have passed on before. She leaves forty three grandchildren, forty-one great-great-grandchildren, making in all five generations which she lived to know.

Her remains were laid to rest beside her daughter at Britt, Hancock County, Iowa.

May her ashes rest in peace
Until the resurrection morn
When her children will be glad
to meet and greet her
In that new life's early dawn.
