WATERLOO - Charles J. Schaefer, 84, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Oct. 29, at Lakeview Landing of cancer.

He was born Jan. 22, 1927, in Waterloo, son of Peter and Wilhemina Haberzeth Schaefer. He married Diana Pavich on June 2, 1951, in Waterloo. She died July 26, 1994.

Mr. Schaefer graduated from St. Mary High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed with Illinois Central Railroad from 1947 until 1988, retiring as a yardmaster.

Survived by four sons, Charles (Julie), Paul (Deb) and John (Zoe,) all of Waterloo, and Eric (Kelli) of St. Charles, Mo.; three daughters, Chris (Jim) Draude and Patrice (Randy) Pilkington, both of Waterloo, and Mary Grayson of St. Charles; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sister Barbara Schaefer OSF of Dubuque and Gloria Barfield of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a special friend, Kathleen Condon of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by a brother, Melvin; and a sister, Mary Kidwell.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. Catholic Order of Foresters rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be distributed to Charlie's favorite charities.
