Donald P. Schatzle, 88, of Waterloo died Tuesday afternoon at Covenant Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1920 in Coggon, the son of Lee R. and Jennie M. Renfer Schatzle.
He married Myrtle Ann Bowers on April 5, 1942 in Coggon. She preceded him in death on August 17, 1980. He then married Emma June Wright on February 11, 1984 in Waterloo.
Don served in the Army during WWII in the South Pacific and Japan. He was co-owner/operator of Don & Del’s Highland Service Station for a number of years.
He was also a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge #105 A.F. & A.M., the El Kahir Shrine and Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Don and June loved to travel in their motor home to visit different places, fish, and enjoy the outdoors. He will always cherish the time he spent with family and friends, telling jokes and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Douglas (Colleen) Schatzle of Waterloo, Kevin (Cheryl) Schatzle and Kirk (Debra) Schatzle both of Cedar Rapids; two stepsons, Richard (Karolyn) Wright of Toledo and Stephen (Peg) Wright of Des Moines; one brother, Phillip (Sandy) Schatzle of Coggon; three sisters, Marie McDowell of El Cajon, CA., Norma (Lawrence) Rowe and Charlotte Kepler both of Coggon; fifteen grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren; and one great great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Vera Lorraine Schatzle.
Services will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at Immanuel Presbyterian Church with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post #138 and the VFW Post 1623.
Friends may call at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball from 6 – 8:30 P.M. Thursday and an hour before services at the church Friday.
