WATERLOO - Robert Earl Thompson, 64, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Oct. 29, at home.

He was born Dec. 25, 1946, in Center, Texas, son of Larry and LaMerle Garrett Thompson. He married Linda Polley in Texas, and they later divorced. He married Dianne Sexton on July 27, 1972, in McAlester, Okla.

Mr. Thompson received his bachelor's degree from Philander Smith College, Little Rock, Ark. He started teaching in the Waterloo School System at Grant Elementary School in 1970. He later was employed for 30 years with John Deere Engine Works as a system analyst, retiring in 2008.

Survived by his wife; a son, William Nathan of California; three daughters, Christy Thompson and Shana (William) Muhammad, both of Waterloo, and Nicole Lee Thompson of San Diego; eight grandchildren, Kobie Stevenson, Alonzo Muhammad, Alijah Muhammad, Alanna Muhammad, Ahkil Muhammad, Ahseem Muhammad, Ahdan Muhammad and Meighan Thompson; his mother, LaMerle Thompson Suell of Center; and two stepbrothers, Marlin (Pam) Suell and Dana (Sonya) Suell, both of Texas.

Preceded in death by his father, Larry Thompson; and stepfather, R. L. Suell.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials: may be made to the family where the proceeds will be given to IMPACTT Foundation (non-profit youth organization dedicated to improving the lives of all youth through educational and athletic opportunities).

Robert's passions in life were basketball, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
