Dorothy L. Fober, 79, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Tuesday afternoon, October 17, 2006, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, Iowa.

She was born on January 12, 1927, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norton in Sterling, Illinois. At a young age she moved with her family to Waterloo where she graduated from West High School. Dorothy then took a job as a cashier for Black’s Department Store for a time.

On November 23, 1946 she was united in marriage to Donald W. Fober at First Methodist Church in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Waterloo until 1952 when they moved to their farm southeast of Plainfield, Iowa, Dorothy helped Don with the farming operation and she later also worked for several years in the housekeeping department at Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly. In 1971 they retired from farming and in 1994 they moved to Waterloo as Don was receiving dialysis and this made it easier for the many trips to dialysis. During this time Dorothy worked as a senior companion and also cared for Don. Don died on November 29, 1994, and Dorothy remained in Waterloo and continued her service as senior companion until her own ill health forced her retirement.

Dorothy was a longtime, current member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Plainfield. She loved her cats and jewelry, passions she gave to her daughter, Carol. Dorothy loved caring and protecting her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she literally lived for.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol & Phillip Thyer of Independence, Iowa; her two grandchildren, Ryan (Jennifer) Thyer of Waterloo, Holly (Clay) Schulte of Cedar Rapids; her three great grandchildren, Austin & Courtney Packard, Noah Thyer, and by one sister, Betty Kadera of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Don.
