CEDAR FALLS - Dorothy Mae Karns Conerd, 83, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 29, at Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center of natural causes.

She was born Dec. 17, 1927, in Shell Rock, daughter of Daniel and Cora Mae Freeland Karns. She married Richard Conerd on Aug. 16, 1947, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waterloo. He died Aug. 26, 2011.

Mrs. Conerd graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1945. She worked as a waitress at Black's Tea Room prior to becoming a telephone operator during World War II, retiring in 1976. She also worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's small-engine and saw-sharpening business. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Dorcas Society at Immanuel.

Survived by a son, Steve of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Diana (Richard) Schmidt of Onalaska, Wis.; four grandchildren, Kimberly (Tim) Humm of Jacksonville, N.C., Andy Schmidt of La Crosse, Wis., Pfc. Tara Schmidt of Fort Riley, Kan., and Samantha Schmidt of Onalaska; a great-grandchild, Lillia Humm of Jacksonville; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Karns of Evansdale.

Preceded in death by a brother, Paul Karns; and three sisters, Mary Homann, Pauline Boelman and Ruth Newlon.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waterloo, where visitation begins at 9 a.m., with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, also in Waterloo. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy was a very giving person who showed kindness to everyone. Dorothy loved to bowl and enjoyed sending flowers to those she knew.
