Richard Eugene Nemmers, 76, of Cedar Falls, died at home Tuesday, October 3, 2006, after a long illness. He was born October 26, 1929 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Raphael P. and Cecilia Nemmers.

He graduated from St. Mary’s in 1947. Richard obtained Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Commerce at the University of Iowa in 1952.

Richard married Marianne Lenk on December 27, 1950. He was employed by Gulf Oil Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after graduation from the University of Iowa. In 1953, Richard helped develop the Waterloo Register Company, and became Executive Vice President. The factory was moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1970, at which time he went into business with friends developing Pizza Hut franchises and roller skating centers under the name of Skate Country. Centers were located in Rochester, Minnesota, Dubuque, Iowa, Des Moines, Iowa and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tucson, Arizona, West Palm Beach, Florida, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Richard was a member of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce and became President in 1970. He was also on the Board of Directors at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls, served on the Board of Directors of the Waterloo YMCA, and was on the original board that founded and developed Beaver Hills Country Club in Cedar Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Marianne, of Cedar Falls; two sons, Richard B. (Cindy) Nemmers of Cedar Falls and Robert J. Nemmers of Waterloo; a daughter, Julie (Dan) Deery of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren, Ben Nemmers, Jamie (Tom) Petrie, Daina, Deeni, D.J., Dustin, Dylan, Deserai and Dallas Deery; and two sisters, Carol Russo of Las Vegas, Nevada and Nancy Hammer of Cedar Falls.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Don Nemmers, and a sister, Marilyn Balabon.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Thursday, October 5, 2006, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with interment at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 5—8:00 pm Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before the service at the church. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
