CEDAR FALLS - Alfred J. Semm, 96, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Sept. 26, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly.

He was born Nov. 1, 1914, in Alta Vista, son of Fred and Minna Glienke Semm. He married Dorothy Mae Hagedorn on Sept. 7, 1952, in Waterloo. She died Aug. 4, 2003.

Mr. Semm graduated from Wartburg Academy, Waverly, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy Air Corps. He owned and operated Iowa Refrigeration Co. from 1950 to 1997. He was a member of American Legion Post 237 and Forty and Eight, and was a charter member of Refrigeration Service Engineers Society.

Survived by a daughter, Debra (Gil) Rich of Sumner; three grandchildren, Karen (Nathan) Thompson of Cedar Rapids, Laura (Joel) Nelson of Council Bluffs and Jeremy Rich of Dubuque; and two great-grandchildren, Abigail Nelson and Noah Thompson.

Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and Emil; and eight sisters, Bertha, Louise and Millie Semm, and Martha Fox, Anne Fischer, Carolyn Andrews, Marie Nelson and Emma Collazo.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church and American Heart Association.
