WATERLOO - Herle Harry Holden, 93, of Waterloo, died Monday, Sept. 26, at Lakeview Landing.

He was born Dec. 9, 1917, in Waterloo, son of Lell and Leona Ceaser Holden. He married Dora Louise Nebbitt on Oct. 28, 1943, in Waterloo.

Herle graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1936 and attended Iowa State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in general engineering in 1940. He was president of Theta Delta Chi fraternity.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1940 with the first group from Black Hawk County. He continued serving until 1945 in Sarasota, Fla., with the Army Air Corps, where he served as a captain and flight instructor for P40s.

He worked in engineering and manufacturing with pumps and concrete mixers at Construction Machinery Co. and at Wayne Engineering, retiring in 1977.

He was an active member of the Rotary Club, lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He was a board member of the Boys & Girls Club of America and chairman of the board of St. Francis Hospital.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Ann (Tom) Plummer of Patterson, Calif., Mary Melberg of Little Rock, Ark., and Barb Orzechowski of Minneapolis; a son, John (Robyn) Holden of Saudi Arabia; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Christine Orzechowski; and a grandson, James David Holden.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Alzheimer's Research.
