WATERLOO - William "Bill" Tannreuther, 56, of Waterloo, died at home Friday, Oct. 28.

He was born May 18, 1955, in Waterloo, son of Robert "Bob" and Charlotte Tannreuther. He married Elizabeth Axline on Aug. 20, 1983, in Waterloo. She died Sept. 20, 2011

Mr. Tannreuther attended Orange School and graduated in the first class from Central High in 1973. He attended college at Wartburg in Waverly and the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, graduating from UNI in 1977 with a degree in environmental studies. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1985 in travel services. He had worked in the specifications department at John Deere PEC site and at Short's Travel and Hampton Inns.

He was a member of the South Waterloo Church of the Brethren, where he served on the church board and for 15 years was co-chair of the live Nativity. He managed the sound system during worship services and ushered for decades. He volunteered for the Orange Township Cemetery Association, the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels.

Survived by his parents; a sister, Ann Tannreuther of Waterloo; his mother-in-law, Shirley Axline of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Sue (Bill) Smoldt of Cedar Falls; a niece and nephew, Jordan and Aaron Smoldt; uncles Dick Klingaman of Waterloo and Bernard Carter of Brainard, Minn.; many cousins; and special friends, Steve and Cheryl Shapiro of Beverly Hills, Calif.

Preceded in death by a sister, Lynn Tannreuther; aunts Jean Klingaman and Eleanor Carter; and uncles Herb Carter of San Diego and Willard Carter of Fort Dodge.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at South Waterloo Church of the Brethren, preceded by a family committal in Orange Township Cemetery, followed by a fellowship lunch. A reception in his memory will be Tuesday (note correct day) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church, Elizabeth Tannreuther Memorial Scholarship Fund, Cedar Valley Hospice, Northeast Iowa Food Bank and Waterloo Salvation Army.
