WATERLOO - Woodrow "Woody" Smith Jr., 54, of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Waterloo, died at home Aug. 25.

He was born Jan. 19,1957, in Waterloo, son of Woodrow Sr. and Lora Hollingsworth Smith. He married Beatrice Knox on Nov. 18, 1978, in Des Moines.

Mr. Smith graduated from Waterloo East High School and attended William Penn University, where he majored in music education. He was a member of Union Baptist Church of Waterloo, Corinthian Baptist Church of Des Moines and later of St. John Church Unleashed, Fort Worth. He taught private music lessons for the Des Moines Public School and surrounding district. He owned Woody's Drum and Music Shop, Des Moines. After moving to Texas he taught at Eagle Mountain Saginaw School District and various other Keller and Trophy Club Schools.

Preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alma Jean Smith; a brother, James Warren; and his stepmother, Jessie Davis Smith.

Survived by his wife; a son, Eric; a daughter, Crystal (Louis) Davis of Fort Worth; two grandchildren; his stepmother, Joann Speller Smith of Waterloo; two sisters, the Rev. Shirley Smith Burt and Cynthia Smith Balark, both of Waterloo; four stepsisters, Willie (Marvin) Monroe, Debra McCree and Yvonne Speller, all of Waterloo, and Karen Moore of Carbondale, Ill.; seven stepbrothers, Daniel Adams, William (Deidra) Speller, Wendell (Carolyn) Speller, Delbert Speller and Herbert (Anita) Speller, all of Waterloo, Ronald (Carla) Speller of Colorado and Darryl (June) Speller of Georgia.

Celebration of Life memorial service: 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Union Missionary Baptist Church, Waterloo.
