Lillian Ruth Phillips, 87, of Elk Run Heights, died Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Allen Hospital. She was born April 10, 1921, in St. Olaf , the daughter of Tom and Johanna Tollefson Olson. She married Dewell I. Phillips on June 7, 1941in Strawberry Point; he preceded her in death in 1996.

She attended country school through the 8th grade, and then entered high school in Strawberry Point. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. She obtained her teacher’s license and taught rural school. She substituted in Black Hawk County for three years then worked as a teacher’s aide for 13 years at Jewett School. Over the years she taught Sunday School, headed Bible School and Christmas Programs, and worked with Brownies and Girl Scouts. She took care of her father for 4 ½ years then she and her husband went to Brownsville, TX for 17 years for the winter months. Since her husband passed away, she had become involved with the Senior Center and traveling various places with her daughter. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, dancing, playing cards, fishing, picnics, playing Scrabble, family and her church.

Survived by two sons, Gerald (Marianne) Phillips of Waterloo; Dennis (Joni) Phillips of Evansdale; one daughter, Marsha (Dennis) Conway of California; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren;one brother, Tom (Barbara) Olson of Des Moines, and two sister-in-laws, Grace and Betty Olson.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Gordon, Selmer and Paul Olson and two sisters, Ellen Johansen and Thelma Gull.

Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 3, 2008 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Evansdale with burial in the Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point. Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at The Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball and also one hour before the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
