WATERLOO - Jerome W. "Jerry" Vauthier, 69, of Waterloo, died Monday, Sept. 12, at Allen Hospital after a short illness.

He was born Sept. 26, 1941, in Evansville, Ind., son of Ernest and Lema Dyson Thacker, and was later adopted by his stepfather, Earl Vauthier. On June 17, 1962, he married Becky Petersen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls.

Mr. Vauthier graduated from Bosse High School, Evansville, in 1959. He joined the U.S. Air Force and continued in the Army Reserves for 20 years. He was a Waterloo police officer, retiring in 1996 after 30 years of service. He also was a member of Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, where he served on their sports committee and was a past commander and past state commander.

Survived by his wife; a son, Mike (Judy) of Denver; two daughters, Melinda (Randall) Brandhorst of Waterloo and Marissa (TJ) Dodd of Cedar Falls; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, John (Linda) of Faubush, Ky.

Preceded in death by a brother, Victor.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, and for an hour before services Friday at the church. Military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Waterloo AMVETS Post 19

Memorials may be directed to Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 or Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Jerry enjoyed golfing, the Chicago Cubs, and going every morning for coffee with his "coffee" group. Most of all, he loved his family dearly. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
