CEDAR FALLS - David E. Sutherland, 84, of Cedar Falls, died at home Sunday, Sept. 4, of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Chariton, son of Carl and Josephine Gonzales Sutherland. On Jan. 4, 1953, he married Janice Rice in Princeton, Mo.

Mr. Sutherland was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He worked at John Deere as a machinist, retiring after 36 years of service, and also was involved in car sales.

Survived by his wife; two sons, David (Valerie) of Germany and Tyrone of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Taryn (Bruce) Lynn of Greenville, Texas, and Romy (Steven) Schmitz of Cedar Falls; a daughter-in-law, Marsha Sutherland of Seagoville, Texas; 13 grandchildren, Todd (Liz) Sutherland, Troy (Erin) Sutherland, Nikki Johnson, Lyndsey and Connor Lynn, Taylor Sutherland, Dawn Lally, Monica (Clay) Kellett, Cassandra, Dakota, Dallas and Garrett Schmitz, and Derrek Sutherland; four great-grandchildren, Briella Sutherland, Evan Sutherland and Tylor and Hannah Johnson; and a brother, Rudy (Evelyn) of Chicago.

Preceded in death by two sons, Dell and Dana; four brothers, John, Carl, Paul and Gust; and a sister, Emma Thomas.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman Post 138 American Legion and Waterloo Post 1623 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

David loved cars and working in his garage on them. He was very family oriented and if he wasn't working on his cars he spent all his time with his family. David will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
