WATERLOO - Alyce M. Walter, 71, of West Des Moines, formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, Aug. 15, at Bright Kavanagh House.

She was born March 25, 1940, in Manchester, daughter of Russell and Ella Coleson Lewis. She married James C. Hayden in California in 1957. They later divorced. She married Charles E. "Chuck" Walter in Galena, Ill., in 1972. He preceded her in death.

She attended school in Waterloo and worked in the health care field until 2005. After moving to West Des Moines in 2006, she worked as a food demonstrator.

Survived by three daughters, Jo K. of Clarksville, Angella M. (Gary) Petersen of Dayton, Ohio, and Rebecca A. (Charles) Hickman of Baltimore; four sons, Charles E. "Chuck" Jr. of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Curtis L. "Curt" of Waterloo, Randall M. (Karla) of West Des Moines and Russell M. (Diana) of Owasso, Okla.; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Virgil (Brenda) Lewis of Manchester, Dick (Harriet) Lewis and Darrel (Barb) Lewis, both of Waterloo, and David (Nancy) Lewis of Riverside, Calif.

Preceded in death by three brothers, James, Bryce and Edward.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at First Church of the Open Bible, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to HCI Care Services of Central Iowa (Hospice of Central Iowa).

Alyce cherished her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to spend time with them playing games, reading books or just watching television with them. To relax, Alyce would spend time crocheting blankets for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
