EVANSDALE - Eva Marie Stapes Cunningham Shafer, 88, of Evansdale, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center, Waterloo, of cancer.

She was born June 11, 1923, on the family farm in Redfield, daughter of Lonnie and Hazel Hawkins Stapes. She married Harold Cunningham on Oct. 12, 1940, in West Des Moines and he preceded her in death. She later married Rueben Shafer on Sept. 9, 1978, in Cedar Falls and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Shafer attended country school in Redfield. She was a member of First Reformed Church, Evansdale, for many years.

Survived by a grandson, Joseph Cunningham of Evansdale; a great-grandson, Sage of Evansdale; a brother, Donald Stapes of Perry; and a nephew, Reid Stapes of Urbandale.

Preceded in death by two sons, Caroll Lee and Mark Allen Cunningham; three sisters, Fern, Fay and Neva Stapes; and a brother, Lloyd Stapes.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, where visitation begins at noon. Burial will be in East Linn Cemetery, rural Redfield.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Eva loved her family. She was a devout homemaker who enjoyed growing vegetables and making hand crafts. Eva was a very generous person.
