WATERLOO - Martha Louise Spates, 85, of Milwaukee, formerly of Waterloo, died at home Wednesday, July 27, of natural causes.

She was born May 5, 1926, in Waterloo, daughter of Arthur Beckley and Blanche Hawkins and was raised by her grandparents, Earnest "Doc" and Adeline Spencer. She married Eddie Williams in Waterloo, and he preceded her in death. She then married Jethro Spates in Waterloo, and he preceded her in death.

Survived by two daughters, Maria Franke of Waterloo and Lenora Spates of Dubuque; a son, Earnest of Milwaukee; 10 grandchildren, including three she raised, Mary Spates and Jimmi O'Neal, both of Waterloo, and Marcella Spates of Palmetto, Ga.; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Jean Spencer of Milwaukee.

Preceded in death by two daughters, Diane Williams and Eleanor Spates.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Payne Memorial AME Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sanders Funeral Service and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 1822 Newell St., where they will receive friends.
