LA PORTE CITY - M. "Dean" Flickinger, 89, of La Porte City, died Wednesday, July 20, at Sunrise Hill Care Center, Traer.

He was born April 19, 1922, in Rowley, son of Dave and Elsa LaGrange Flickinger. He married Lois Kathryn Schirm on May 16, 1943, in Leesville, La.

Mr. Flickinger served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart. He farmed with his father, and later with Ralph Brown from 1946-1949, then near Garrison from 1949-1952. He was a member of the La Porte City American Legion USS San Diego Post 207 and La Porte City Lions Club; was past president of Benton County Rural Electric Cooperative Association Board; and served on the board of directors for the Central Iowa Power Cooperative.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Vicki (Leonard) Fowler of Rosemount, Minn., and LuAnn (Jeff) Elliott of La Porte City; five grandchildren, Troy Fowler, Lisa Merwin, Laura Elliott, Emily Elliott and Lindsey Elliott; and six great-grandchildren, Drake, Seth and Ashlyn Fowler, Mikhaela and Katelyn Merwin and Madeline Pavelka.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and William "Bill"; and a sister, Theo Osborn.

Services: 1 p.m. Sunday at American Lutheran Church, La Porte City, preceded by an hour of visitation. Military rites will be conducted by La Porte City American Legion USS San Diego Post 207 and VFW Post 3983. Inurnment will be held at a later date in West View Cemetery, La Porte City. La Porte City Funeral Service is assisting with arrangements.
