Pvt. Thorwald Anderson
Once With Commandos

HUDSON, IOWA - Mr. and Mrs. Paul Anderson of Hudson received a telegram Friday afternoon from the war department that their son, Pvt. Thorwald Anderson, had been killed in action June 1 in Italy.

Private Andersen enlisted in the national guard in January, 1939, left for Camp Claiborne, Louisiana in February, 1941, with Company D, and arrived overseas January 26, 1942, with the first contingent.

While overseas he joined the British commandos and took part in the African campaign in November, 1942.

He was transferred to a postal section and was sent to Italy in September 1943. On March 16, 1944, he was transferred to an infantry company. He was part of a machine gun squadron at the time of his death.

The Andersens have another son, Ensign John Andersen, in the naval air corps somewhere in South America.

Private Andersen is the first casualty from the Hudson community.

Besides his parents and brother he leaves two sisters, Beth and Carma. He was a graduate of Hudson High School.
