WATERLOO - Richard J. Mensen, of Waterloo, died Friday, July 1, at Covenant Medical Center from A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

He was born May 26, 1944, in Manchester, son of Linus B "Bucky" and Martha R. Hagemann Mensen. He graduated from Columbus High School and was in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, serving as an aircraft mechanic on the USS Enterprise Aircraft Carrier. He was a maintenance mechanic at John Deere for 31 years, retiring in 1995.

Survived by two brothers, Ronald of Waterloo and Loras (Susan) of Winston, Ga.; two sisters, Kathleen (Greg) Budzynski of Mounds View, Minn., and Rose (Terry) Neff of Cedar Rapids; and eight nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Robert.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, with flag presentation by the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Thursday at the church.
