FLINT, Michigan -- For 2 1/2 years after David McLain's best friend Nathan Nicholson died in a motorcycle accident, he could barely pass any of his classes at Kettering University.

He said he couldn't handle the grief. Four years after the accident, McLain still remembers his friend.

McLain, along with about 25 others, went to Kettering University's campus Wednesday night for a candlelight event to remember victims of car crashes. Each person lit a candle and turned around and said their loved one's name. McLain said events such as this help him cope with the grief. "It helps because these people haven't forgotten."

McLain, 25, and Nicholson, who was 22, were riding their motorcycles near campus when they became separated. When McLain caught up with him, he found Nicholson lying on the ground after he had been hit by a car.

McLain said that at first he didn't think the injuries to his friend were serious, but Nicholson later died from them.

McLain and Nicholson, who were fraternity brothers at Theta Xi, enjoyed fixing cars together.

Nathan Nicholson Memorial Fund established –
To help Tiger Cubs go to Day Camps

Nathan Nicholson loved camping. His family wants to remember this love by giving new Tiger Cubs the ability to go to Day Camp, and experience the wonder of camp, just like Nathan did.

Thanks to the continued and generous donations from the Lantz family of Cedar Falls, the “Nathan Nicholson Memorial Fund” has been established. Each year, new Tiger Cub Scouts who are attending Summer Day Camp for the first time will be eligible to have their Day Camp fees paid through this fund. Applications are available at the Boy Scout Service Center.

Nathan Nicholson was involved in scouting for 15 years. He loved going to summer camp and attending troop campouts at Ingawanis. Nathan was a CIT for one year, and worked summer camp for two years where he enjoyed helping out in the first-aid cabin, the kitchen, and assisting his Grandpa with the horseback riding. Nathan became an Eagle Scout on 7/20/1999.
