WATERLOO - Ethel Sallis, 69, of Waterloo, died Thursday, June 16, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of natural causes.

She was born Jan. 27, 1942, in New Orleans, daughter of Willie Clayton and Victoria Palfry, and was raised by her aunt and uncle, Frank and Henrietta Harrison. She married Irvin Johnson Sr. in 1960 in New Orleans, and they later divorced. She then married Norman Eddie Sallis Sr. in 1980 in Waterloo. He died Dec. 16, 2001.

Mrs. Sallis was formerly employed by Tyson Foods, Heartland Inn and Motel 6.

Survived by four daughters, Patricia Wortham and Kim Sallis, both of Waterloo, Carolyn (David) Smith of Spartanburg, S.C., and Vyrlyn (James) Ethington of Alamogordo, N.M.; two sons, Derrick (Karen) Sallis of Spartanburg and Anthony "Bean" (Lilly) Sallis of Tampa, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary (Walter) Wilson, Catherine Schexnayder and JoAnn Burbank, all of New Orleans, and Diane Linton of Waterloo; and six brothers, Raymond (Nadine) Sheppard of Houston, Clinton Sheppard of Jackson, Miss., and Andrew Harrison, Larry (Panthel) Harrison, LeRoy (Josie) Harrison and Johnnie Harrison, all of New Orleans.

Preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Norman Eddie Sallis Jr. and Calvin Sallis; two brothers, Roy Sheppard and Harold Harrison; and three grandsons, Richard, Brian and Phillip.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Payne Memorial AME Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sanders Funeral Service and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 202 Harrison St., where they will receive friends.
