Mrs. Lucy E. Welstead, wife of Supervisor Thos. Welstead, passed away peacefully at 3:00 o'clock Tuesday morning following a stroke of paralysis that attacked her Friday last. Death occurred at the family home, 1815 Lafayette street.

Her physical condition weakened rapidly and the end came before the clouds of unconsciousness had arisen. At times her mental faculties brightened, but not enough for recognition of her relatives. Her brothers, sisters and children were notified that the end as near and several of them were at her bedside until her eyes were closed in eternal sleep.

Shortly afterward, Mr. and Mrs. Welstead moved to Illinois, and in 1865 came to Iowa, settling on a farm in Blackhawk county. For 20 years they followed agricultural pursuits, but in 1885 retired from active farm work and moved to Waterloo.

Mrs. Welstead was a member of Grace Methodist church and was a regular attendant when her health permitted. At all times she maintained a happy and cheerful disposition, endeavoring to the best of her ability to follow the teachings of the good book and lessen the hardships of others.

At one time she was affiliated with the Rebekah lodge, but in later life she was unable to attend the meetings and dropped her membership.

Mrs. Welstead is survived by her husband, Thomas Welstead, four brothers, two sisters, two sons and one daughter. The brothers are Levi, Nathan, Chester and Alvin Bennett, all of Waterloo. The sisters are Mrs. Wm. Farnsworth, Waterloo, and Mrs. Sam. Willard, Springvllle, Iowa. Her sons are Fred E. Welstead, principal of the Decorah schools, and Clarence H. Welstead, a landscape gardener of Waterloo. Her daughter is Mrs. Delos Jordan, of Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from her late home, 1815 Lafayette street for immediate relatives and regular services will be held at Grace church at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. B. G. Cattermole pastor of Grace church, will conduct the service. The remains will be laid at rest in Fairview Cemetery.
