WATERLOO - Wendell Lee O'Banion, 74, of Waterloo, died Monday, June 13, at home.

He was born Jan. 29, 1937, in Danville, Ill., son of Virgil and Lillian Dodson O'Banion. He married Barbara Barnett on Aug. 9, 1958, at St. Mary's Church, Waterloo.

Mr. O'Banion was a U.S. Army veteran and was employed with John Deere for 35 years, retiring Dec. 31, 1998. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and UAW Local 838, and was a Boy Scout leader for 10 years with Troop 14 at Edison Elementary School.

Survived by his wife; a son, Charles of Vacaville, Calif.; three daughters, Barbara and Michelle O'Banion, and Carrie (Roger) Alston, all of Waterloo; and two grandsons, Jared and Justin Koweil.

Preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Robert and Peter (Liz).

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, with full military rites by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 5 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Wendell liked camping, playing cards, watching the Cubs, playing bingo and spending time with his family and friends.
