WATERLOO - James Russell "Jim" Ciesielski, 72, of Waterloo, died Monday, June 13, at Southwest Regional Medical Center-Cardio Vascular Center, McComb, Miss.

He was born Dec. 14, 1938, in Independence, son of Paul Albert and Mary Calista Merkel Ciesielski. He married Judith Mae Miller on Nov. 16, 1967, at St. John's Catholic Church Chapel, Independence.

Mr. Ciesielski graduated from Jesup High School in 1957, then served in the U.S. Army. He was employed at John Deere, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 700 and UAW Local 838.

Survived by his wife; a son, Roger (Cindy) of Waterloo; two granddaughters, Hannah and Hailee Ciesielski; and a brother, Ronald (Fran) of Independence.

Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eugene, and an infant; and an infant sister.

Services: 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at White Funeral Home, Jesup, with a 3 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Columbus High School Athletics Department, both in Waterloo, and to Waverly Animal Rescue, Waverly.

Jim was an avid UNI booster and sports enthusiast. He was an outstanding athlete and enjoyed playing baseball for the Independence Indians as a young man. He also was active in fast pitch softball and was a manager and player on many teams over the years. In 1993 he was inducted into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame by the Iowa Softball Association. He enjoyed stock cars, owned the #37c stock car and managed the racing team. Jim played in several golf leagues in the Waterloo area, as golfing with friends was a big part of his retirement.
