CEDAR FALLS - John Robert Nero, 82, of Cedar Falls, died at home Saturday, May 28.

He was born Oct. 10, 1928, in Bottineau, N.D., son of Charles W. and Mary D. Boehnke Nero. He married Doris Gauger on April 19, 1954, in Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Mr. Nero graduated from Dakota College at Bottineau and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Northern Iowa. He was a teacher for eight years and school counselor for 23 years in the Cedar Falls school system, retiring in 1988. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the latter part of World War II and during the Korean Conflict.

Survived by his wife; a son, Thomas John of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Kathleen Anne (Gary) Grauerholz of Marshalltown; and four grandchildren, Jana (Rick) Morgan, Wade (Jayna) Grauerholz, and John and Mary Nero.

Preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Irene Schleicher and Virginia Burke.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church, with inurnment at a later date in Oak Creek Cemetery, Bottineau, Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. His body was donated to Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls Community Schools Foundation and the church.
