WATERLOO - Robert Maurice Hudson, 95, formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, May 23, 2011, at Fountain West Health Care Center, West Des Moines. A memorial service will be conducted June 9 at 2 p.m. at McLaren's Funeral Chapel, West Des Moines.

Bob was born Oct. 12, 1915, in rural Ringgold County to James M. and Mary Hosteter Hudson. The eighth of 11 children, Bob was the last surviving member of the family.

He graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1933 and later became manager of the United Food Market. On April 9, 1939.

He and Ruth Margarette Busby of Diagonal were married in the Methodist Church at Mount Ayr, where they resided until Bob became office manager of Canfield Lumber Co. in Waterloo in 1954. In 2003, they moved to the Lodge of Ashworth, West Des Moines, where they resided until March of 2011.

Bob was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as secretary to the captain of the USS Hyde, a troop carrier in the Pacific. He loved telling stories about his war experiences, and he attended several reunions of his Hyde shipmates.

Bob and Ruth were lifelong Methodists and were lovers of music. They participated in many church and musical activities in Mount Ayr and Waterloo. Bob was a longtime member and officer in the Masonic Lodge, and he and Ruth also were members and officers in the Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine. In Waterloo, they were members of Grace United Methodist Church and later of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

They were proud of the accomplishments of their daughters, grandsons and great-grandchildren. They rarely missed musical performances by their grandsons in Cedar Rapids and at UNI, and were grateful to have attended all the college graduations and weddings of their grandsons

Bob is survived by Ruth, his loving wife and constant companion of 72 years, of West Des Moines; two daughters, Beverley Duffy of Des Moines and Mary Taylor and husband David of Webster Groves, Mo.; four grandsons, Mark Duffy of Des Moines, Joel Duffy and wife Krista of Marion, Brian Baetz and wife Jenny of Webster Groves and Jonathan Baetz and wife Karen of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren, Brian's children, Zachary and Jacqueline Baetz; Jonathan's children, Julia, Nicholas and Trevor Baetz; and Joel's daughters, Cailin and Rachel Duffy .

Also surviving are four stepgrandsons, Gil Taylor of Chicago, Randy Taylor of Downers Grove, Ill., Kevin Taylor of Alameda, Calif., and Patrick Taylor of Lake Quivera, Kan., and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Mary; his six brothers, Walter, Elbert, Orval, Donald, Glenn and Alvin; and his four sisters, Ermal Phillips, Vernice Cowell, Clarice Bracewell and Margaret Pence.
