WATERLOO - Helen M. O'Brien, 94, of Waterloo, died Monday, May 23, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born July 2, 1916, in Dubuque, daughter of Oden and Bessie Oakley Brown. She married Cyril J. O'Brien on Jan. 10, 1940, in Dubuque. He died May 30, 1982.

Mrs. O'Brien graduated from the Finley School of Nursing in Dubuque in 1938. She was a registered nurse working at Finley Hospital and with the Visiting Nurses Association, both in Dubuque. Later she was a volunteer school nurse at Columbus High School, Waterloo, for many years.

Survived by two sons, Dennis of Keshena, Wis., and Paul (June) of O'Fallon, Ill.; four daughters, Cheryl (Mike) Buelow and Deborah (Bob) Esser, both of Dubuque, and Diane (John) Waychoff and Dawn (Tim) Henry, both of Waterloo; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Lois O'Brien, Donna O'Brien and Dorothy Brown, all of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, John Gregory of Dubuque.

Preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, George Brown; a sister, Alta Apel; and a daughter-in-law, Delores O'Brien.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial at 2:30 p.m. in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Dubuque. Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
