CEDAR FALLS - J. Thomas Sellers, 68, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at home with his family at his side after a two-year battle with cancer. A private memorial service will be held at the cabin at a later date. Iowa Cremation, Cedar Rapids, is assisting the family.

Joel Thomas Sellers was born on Feb. 2, 1943, to Robert and Dorothy Westeen Sellers in Boone. He was united in marriage to Janna Weston on Aug. 15, 1965, in Boone. Thomas received his Bachelor of Arts from UNI and did postgraduate work at UNI, Michigan Tech, Iowa State University, Drake University and Bemidji State. He worked for Cedar Falls Community Schools from 1965-2000. He taught eighth-grade science class and coached multiple junior and senior sports, including basketball. He enjoyed canoeing, backpacking, fishing at Isle Royale National Park at Lake Superior. Also, spending time at the lakeside cabin in northern Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife, Janna; children, Kimberly (Dean) Schomaker of Nevada, Paige (Matt) Behounek of Windsor Heights and Kyle (Karri) Sellers of Ham Lake, Minn.; grandchildren, Shelby, Hunter and Brody Schomaker, all of Nevada, Lilah Behounek of Windsor Heights and Bailey Corkery of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Robert L. Sellers of St. Paul, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
